Delhi Awakens to Dangerous Haze Following Celebrations
On Tuesday morning residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" category.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings
Multiple areas of Delhi showed an AQI over 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the healthy limit established by the WHO.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times above acceptable standards.
Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts
For the past four years, the government had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that blankets the metropolis as the cold season sets in.
Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed local government petitioned the supreme court to request a relaxation of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".
Court Decision and Reality
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during limited time windows throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.
Several recording stations throughout Delhi registered pollution peaking around midnight to the most severe levels recorded during the festival in at least three years.
Cross-Border Effects
The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants originating in across the border following the festivities.
Chronic Environmental Crisis
Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.
During celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the worst levels ever documented in Beijing, which was once viewed as the world's most polluted city.
Various Contamination Sources
The problem in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby areas of farming communities.
Within these states, farmers routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.
Medical and Financial Consequences
Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the capital region is significant, according to various investigations.
These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to cancer.
Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand premature mortalities each year in Delhi.
