In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major explosions shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Background: Rising Strains and Prior Developments
The incident takes place against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major developments leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more discussions scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed claims about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
