Man City 3-0 Man United: Hemp on target in City comfortable victory.

Much like bad weather hit the northern region the prior day, City blew Manchester United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing 3-0 victory for the City coach's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their leadership claims as they reinforced their standing at the league summit.

Consecutive Defeats for Manchester United

This outcome represented back-to-back Women's Super League setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since May 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the table toppers with their title hopes in serious doubt.

Manchester United's ability to juggle league and European football with a limited roster has been a frequently analyzed topic since they qualified for the European competition. Considering the schedule, it always appeared this was the matchday that would truly test this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they appeared fatigued from start to finish, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a a few adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought energy, although the omission of the high-performing Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

City, in contrast, have fewer fitness worries. Jeglertz made a single alteration from last week’s win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since returning from a physical setback.

Commanding Opening Period

The pressure started to accumulate for Skinner and his team from the first whistle. This was a show of the strength from City whose potent forward line played with and pulled the visitors apart with a sublime first half performance that saw them net a trio in under half an hour.

This put the hosts completely dominant and left United struggling. Before this match, the away side had conceded just few in this domestic competition but they collapsed in the presence of the hosts' offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The omens came early when Vivianne Miedema used her power to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot off target. Hemp was at the core of everything early on, taking advantage of the room left by Riviere down the visitors' wing. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had a number of attacks forwards, their straightforward approach giving them options in the flanks but they could not challenge the City goalkeeper. City, in the meantime, commanded the ball, probing their opponents and trying to pull them out of their structure.

Scoring Spree

They made their pressure count with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A cross to the far post was headed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's seventh goal from a cross of the term.

They extended their cushion with another pair of goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was able to drive through the center from central defence, the field opened up for the hosts. The key Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right before sending a pinpoint low cross for Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a additional score after a swift turnover in the ball saw Hemp allowed the space to fire a shot home from distance.

After the Break

The primary change came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to change the course of the match. Former Manchester City player Park came nearest, striking the upright, but the visitors were creatively abject and did not manage to record a solitary shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have extended their advantage when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the winning team. After failing to defeat any team who ended above them in the prior term, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to put them in a commanding situation after nine matches.
