A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
