The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
